Getting a good reading
The reading will not start, or keeps failing
The camera needs to see your fingertip and nothing else. Cover both the lens and the flash completely with the pad of your finger, resting rather than pressing — pressing hard squeezes the blood out of the tissue the camera is trying to watch. Warm hands read better than cold ones. If you are outdoors in bright sun, cup your other hand over the phone.
Why does it take thirty seconds?
A rate needs beats to count, and variability needs the gaps between them. Thirty seconds gives roughly thirty beats, which is enough for both to settle. A shorter reading would be quicker and less true, and there is no point in a number you cannot rely on.
My reading is different from my watch or my pulse oximeter
Heart rate genuinely moves — talking, standing up, a deep breath, and it changes. Two devices measuring a few seconds apart should be expected to disagree by a few beats. If two devices disagree by a lot, and repeatedly, take a third reading sitting still for a minute first, and if it persists, mention it to your doctor rather than to us.
What does "the spacing between your beats varied more than usual" mean?
Exactly and only what it says. HeartGlance noticed that the gaps between your beats during that reading were less even than they usually are. That happens for many ordinary reasons — moving, talking, a cold finger, an unsteady grip on the phone. It is not a diagnosis, and HeartGlance is not able to make one. If you see it often, it is worth mentioning to your doctor, who can order the test that would actually answer the question.
The numbers
What is heart rate variability, and why is mine low?
It is the small variation in the gap between beats, in milliseconds. More variation generally reflects a body that is well rested and adapting easily; less can follow poor sleep, illness, alcohol, or stress. It falls with age, which is why HeartGlance compares you with people your own age rather than with athletes. A single low reading means very little. A trend over weeks means more.
Where do the "typical" ranges come from?
Resting heart rate percentiles come from NHANES 1999–2008, a US national health survey. Heart rate variability comes from the Lifelines cohort published in 2020. Blood pressure categories are the American Heart Association's. All three are cited inside the app and on the doctor's report, so a clinician can check them.
Can HeartGlance measure blood pressure or oxygen from the camera?
No, and it does not claim to. Blood pressure and blood oxygen are entered by you or read from a paired device. Any phone app claiming to measure blood pressure from a camera alone should be treated with suspicion.
Can it detect atrial fibrillation?
No. Detecting a rhythm disorder is a regulated medical claim that requires clearance HeartGlance does not have and does not pretend to have. It will tell you when the beat spacing looked unusually varied, as an observation about the signal, and it will point you at your doctor. That is the honest limit of what a phone camera can support.
Subscriptions
What do I get without paying?
Unlimited readings, forever, with no account. This week's trend, your whole history, blood pressure and oxygen logging, medications and their reminders, the alerts you set yourself, and the doctor's report on screen. Nothing you record is ever taken away from you, including if a subscription lapses.
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are held by the store, so cancelling happens there. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → HeartGlance. On Android: Play Store → your profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions. The Subscription screen inside the app links straight to the right page. Cancelling stops the renewal; premium keeps working until the period you have paid for ends.
I cancelled during the trial. Will I be charged?
No. Cancel before the third day ends and nothing is taken. The app also reminds you the day before a trial ends, so it cannot roll over unnoticed.
I paid and premium is not showing
Tap Restore purchases on the Subscription screen. That asks the store again, which fixes it in nearly every case — a new phone, a reinstall, or a purchase that completed while the app was closed. If it does not, write to us with the store receipt and we will sort it out.
Your data
Do I get a new phone's readings back?
If Apple Health or Health Connect sync is on, your heart rate readings live in your phone's health store as well, and that comes across with a normal device transfer or backup. Turn sync on before you move if you want that. Cloud sync between devices is planned but is not in this version, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
How do I delete everything?
Delete the app. Everything goes with it, because there is no copy anywhere else. If you turned on health sync, readings already written to Apple Health or Health Connect are yours to remove there, in those apps.
